Vince is # 9
The Summer of 1999
When Vince returned home for the summer, we as parents, wanted him to be gainfully employed with a summer job for the many obvious reasons all parents understand. He had little initiative to search; we passed this off as a normal, but frustrating, situation. He finally landed a job at Blockbuster. Vince had told us he didn't sleep much at school in the spring; this pattern also continued through the summer. In fact, I clearly remember an August morning in which Vince shouted upstairs to Debbie (my wife) and I at 4:30 a.m. in the morning, " Come on you old people, get up and come for a jog with me"! He hadn't slept at all that night. Of course, we didn't oblige him. But his behavior seemed really odd, and we were becoming somewhat concerned.
Vince also displayed little patience with his sister Lauren, two years his junior. He was very short with her and critical. We passed this off as the normal brother/sister fight pattern common in so many families. Lauren and Vince grew up together, but it sure seemed they fought a lot once the teen years began. However, this summer, Lauren was clearly being affected by Vince's short, rude manner.
We visited the Jersey Shore the first week of August. Outwardly,
Vince looked physically very healthy.
